Head of Data Science

Our client is a global tropical vegetable seed business based in Thailand. They're looking for an experienced Head of Data Science to maintain and grow the infrastructure that supports our genomics and digital phenotyping capabilities that enable plant breeders to serve small-holder vegetable farmers. In this role, you will work closely with researchers and technical services to design smart data management strategies, develop scalable systems, and support the integration of cutting-edge research workflows. Your work will directly power scientific discovery to make a world-wide impact.

Responsibilities:

Data Science Leadership

• Manage data science team and support their growth of professional development
• Design and implement data management strategies for large-scale genomics and image data, including the development and maintenance of hardware and software infrastructure
• Stakeholder management across a wide geographic, cultural and crop dimensions

Technical Innovation

• Manage and optimize data pipelines for the collection, storage, processing, and integration of genomics data, digital images, and deep learning models, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance
• Apply data architecture concepts to design scalable, efficient systems and support the integration of high-performance computing (HPC) environments with data management systems
• Provide technical expertise to interdisciplinary teams, stay up-to-date with emerging technologies, and lead a team of data specialists in implementing best practices for data management
• Collaborate with the lead bioinformatics scientist and the director of technical services design and implement data management strategies for large-scale genomics

Requirements:

• Demonstrated leadership ability with experience in assembling and leading high-performing teams
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment
• Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences

Technical Competencies

• Ph.D. or Master Degree in IT, data science. applied computing or biological science with 10 years of experience in bioinformatics, data science, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on genomics data architecture and management, preferably in an agricultural or plant science context
• Familiarity with ISA-95 framework for integrating business and lab processes, and experience applying it to laboratory data management systems
• Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, and Bash shell scripting.
• Experience with Unix/Linux systems administration and high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and SQL/noSQL database platforms
• Demonstrated experience in the implementation of large software systems (ERP, LIMS, etc)
• Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and project management tools
